Don't Plough Me In

This sight greeted me on the way to work this morning. Nothing quite like trudging through the wind and the cold and the snow with the additional headache of having to deal with man-made obstacles.
But honestly, it wasn't that bad. A word to the wise though, if you want to create a 'walkable' community, it has to be a combined effort. Private plough contractors can't cave in the sidewalk willy-nilly just so that the parking lot is completely clean. Intentional or not, it sends a contradictory message that while our City Council talks a lot about making our city a walkers' paradise, it sometimes forgets to cross the T's and dot the I's.
The thing I notice after a snow storm is that the main roads and parking lots are cleared in no time at all, but sidewalks and side streets are sometimes days in the offing. But while I understand that major arteries are the priority, it would be nice if sidewalks might be given the courtesy of treatment as a major conveyance of getting people hither and yon.
I don't expect that to change anytime soon, but maybe we can at least ask plough drivers to not leave piles of snow in the way of us simple bipeds as they move snow around. Thanks.
